What Is A Muay Thai Bag?
Muay Thai is a form of martial arts that comes from Indochina. Over the years, it has become very popular in the South Pacific. Modern Muay Thai is primarly a ring sport, using gloves that are similar to western boxing gloves. Muay Thai is a common part of mixed martial arts training as well and many MMA trainers now use Muay Thai bags in their facilities.
The main idea behind Muay Thai is that you have eight different body spots that you can use to attack an opponent. Four of these spots are nothing more than a collection of savage hits below the elbow and knee, but four other spots account for the hands and the feet.
Because these attacks are more unique than other forms of fighting and martial arts, Muay Thai requires specialized training and equipment. The Muay Thai bag is a special type of hanging heavy bag that was developed to meet the needs of practicers of this martial art form.
Different in size from the average boxing bag, a Muay Thai bag is thinner and longer. Bag height is usually between five and six feet long; this length accommodates to high and low kicks and punches. It is designed to be about the same diameter as a person, to practice the holds used prior to the particular savage knee strikes that Muay Thai is known for.
The bag falls into the standard weight range categories as most heavy boxing bags do. The average weight is at least 85 pounds, which is ideal for the tough punches and kicks that will be thrown its way.
One difference between a Muay Thai bag and boxing bag is the filling; the bags are shipped to homes and gyms empty. This enables the trainer or home user to fill the bag anyway that they want; they can customize for the best fit and feel.
Muay Thai bags are hanging heavy bags but are subject to more force than typical hanging boxing bags. Because of this, each Muay Thai trainer has a different idea of how to fill the bag. Most trainers fill the bottom of the bag with sand because it is dense and will keep the bag from moving if that mass is centered low.
After the sand, the rent of the bag can be filled with rice, flour, or cloth rags. Each of these items has their own benefits. For example, cloth rags easily absorb all blows; flower has a similar feel to stand when in the bag; rice is a good compromise between the two.
As for Muay Thai, it is an exciting sport where you get amazing hits not seen elsewhere. Since this form of martial arts is unique, it is no wonder that they had to develop specialize equipment; this equipment, including Muay Thai heavy bags, can be found in some of the best gyms and mixed martial arts training facilities around the globe.
