Thai Hand
How does pouring water over one hand of the deceased generate good karma at a Thai Buddhist Funeral?

I am not Thai, but I am a buddhist and we have the same tradition in our country.

Pouring water itself is not generating any good or bad Kamma, it is just an externalization of internal quality. Here, people try to remind the good Kamma they have already committed in their life and share that merit with the died relative. Like in loving- kindness meditation one can extend the power of the radiant quality towards conciseness of the died one.

The poring water is just a symbolizm/externalization of it. It is just like marriage rituals. If two people decided to commit to one another in the rest of their lifetime, that feeling remains as an internal one. But to express that feeling externally, people perform various rituals and ceremonies, according to their cultural and religious back grounds.
