How can I stop myself pulling my punches?
I get attacked a lot, but I can never really bring myself to punch someone back. How can I stop myself pulling my punches, or stopping them before they hit the target?
I know this shouldn’t really be in the Sports Other section, but I didn’t see one it really fitted into.
I’m sorry, I really should have put this on, I’m not actually afraid of getting hurt. I really couldn’t care about that. I’m not sure WHY I can’t punch them back.
You’re pulling your punches because you lack the confidence to commit. There’s nothing wrong with it, everyone feels that “scared” amped up feeling during/before a fight. However, you can’t let it stop you. Here are some tips on self defense;
1-Do not ever start the fight or make the first move. Not only is this sensible in a legal standpoint (You won’t get charged if you don’t hit first), but it’s also a good defensive point. Making the first move forces you to show your style. It makes you reach out and *touch* someone, which means that if you don’t hit right, you’re going to get hurt. So at the start of any attack, make sure you are in a defensive position! This will allow you to turn their moves against them.
2-Make sure you have a good stance, your posture and stance will impact any move you make 100 fold, and can either make you a great fighter or ruin you. This is what I use;

The only difference is, I keep my hands semi open. That way, when someone reaches out to strike me, I can grab their wrist/arm/hair-Whatever. Once you’ve got that hold on someone, you can either disable them (break the arm for example), or strike them (face or lower stomach is best. Avoid the neck, you can kill someone if you don’t know what you’re doing.)
3-Finally, once the fight has begun and they’ve made the first strike, Do not be afraid to commit to an attack! If you brush away their first or second strike, the best way to end a fight is often to strike quickly and effectively at a vulnerable point in your opponents body.
