I’ve heard a number of horror stories about training a Pomeranian puppy. Some folks claim that Pomeranian pups are extremely hardheaded and do not respond well to obedience training…
Well…That’s totally absurd!
Look, from personal experience, I can say that training a Pomeranian puppy is relatively easy and fun. Believe me this breed is A LOT EASIER to train than say, the Dachshunds.
And if you want a minimal hassle yet highly effective method for training your Pomeranian puppy, then I suggest that you look no further than clicker training.
You see, I have a 5 month old Pomeranian pup which I named Fluffy (very original name!). He’s quite a well behaved pup, but I still had some trouble teaching him basic obedience commands. I also had a slightly frustrating time house training him.
But after using the clicker training approach, everything became so much easier! When it comes to training a dog with a clicker, you need to concentrate on techniques that promote behavior fluency.
Most folks use the clicker as a correction-based approach to dog training and that’s NOT IDEAL at all. We should utilize the clicker as a conditioned reinforcer to help shape positive behaviors in our Pomeranian pups.

Anyway, here are some useful tips for clicker training a Pomeranian puppy:
(1) It’s essential that you get the timing of your clicks correctly. In order to become a good clicker trainer, you have to be pretty quick with your thumb. If you can click quickly and ACCURATELY, your puppy will learn a new behavior much faster.
(2) Use stimulus control cues to instill a new positive behavior in your puppy. First you should focus on making your puppy perform that behavior without adding a cue. When your pup is able to perform the behavior several times, you then establish a cue in order him make 100% fluent.
(3) Don’t shy away from employing clicker target training exercises. They are invaluable for teaching new behaviors to your puppy. You know, target training a Pomeranian puppy with a clicker is extremely FUN!
