You have a piece of gold jewelry weighing 9.38 g. Its volume is 0.659 cm3. Assume that the metal is an alloy (mixture) of gold and silver, which have densities of 19.3 g/cm3 and 10.5 g/cm3, respectively. Also assume that there is no change in volume when the pure metals are mixed. Calculate the percentage of gold (by mass) in the alloy.
I have used a proprietary spreadsheet I have been developing just for this sort of thing, but I will give you the answers.
There are 5.396324 grams of gold, it comprises 57.53011% of the alloy by weight. The jewelry could be marked 13K.
If you need to work it out, here are the 2 equations:
g + s = 9.38
(g/19.3) + (s/10.5) = 0.659
