How to legalize a bootleg copy of Windows XP Pro?
I “inherited” a computer that came stock with XP Home, but had an illegal copy of XP Pro installed over it. I have purchased an OEM disk for Windows XP Pro – is there a way to punch in the code for the OEM disk that I have, in order to make the current copy of XP Pro legal, or will I have to reformat and start from scratch with the OEM copy?
There are two ways to change the product key. I suggest that you change it through the registry (easiest)
Begin by opening the Registry Editor (type ‘regedit’ in Run)and navigating to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrent VersionWPAEvents
In the right pane, right-click the ODBETimer binary value and select Modify. Change at least one character of this value to either a number from 0 to 9 or to a letter from A to F, then click OK and close the Registry Editor. This renders the current product key invalid and deactivates Windows.
Now, it’s time to reactivate Windows using your new product key. Click Start | Run and enter the command:
C:system32oobemsoobe /a
(if C: is not your OS directory than you need to change the drive letter accordingly.
At this point, Windows will launch the Product Activation Wizard.
