How many ounces should my boxing gloves be when I practise punching the hook and jab pads with a trainer? I’m searching online for a good pair for this purpose, but I’m not sure which size gloves to choose.

In my opinion, I really don’t know where some of these people get their answers from, 16 ounces that’s crazy! When you’re working the pads with your trainer it really isn’t that much about power it’s more about speed and accuracy in this case a nice 10 to 12 ounce glove will do you just fine.
If your pounding the heavy bag depending on how big you are and how much you weigh a 16 ounce glove would be too excessive unless you’re a Heavyweight or Super Heavyweight. You have to take in to consideration that if you are a amateur fighter your competition gloves are either 10 or 12 ounces if you are a professional there are 8 and 10 ounce gloves used.
I’ve been to gyms all over this country and a few in other countries and I can honestly write that I’ve seen very few 16 ounce gloves being used except by fighters well over 200 pounds. The old way of thinking was the heavier the glove while training the easier it will be when you have competition gloves on. I’ve have sparred with 12 and 14 ounce gloves but nothing any bigger than that and I weigh 162 pounds (out of shape, I might add).
For pad work get yourself a nice pair of Reyes, Grant or Ringside 10 ounce lace up gloves and you’ll love them. Stay away from Everlast, they sell garbage go to Ringside.com or Grant.com they will have exactly what you need.
