How is it decided whether a people group will end in -ese, -ian, -i, or whatever?
Such as:
China -> Chinese
Siam -> Siamese
America -> American
Mexico -> Mexican
Israel -> Israeli
Yemen -> Yemeni
Is there a pattern? Is it based on location, or something else? But the German and the English are much closer geographically to each other than to us, and yet Germany has the same ending as American rather than like the Irish, Swedish, etc.
Hmm, interesting. I don’t know, but I see a pattern:
East Asians usually end in “ese”, Middle Easterners usually end in “i”, and Europeans (INCLUDING Mexico and America, who’s names are derived from Spanish and Italian respectively) end in “an”.
