R.I.P. Sir Henry Cooper. Would Henry have beat Ali or Clay at the time if he floored him earlier in the round?
Sir Henry Cooper tragically died a few hours ago at the age of 76. Henry was a very good fighter who was British and European Champion as well as winning a Lonsdale Belt outright. And will be remembered for his fights against Ali twice, Floyd Patterson, Ingemar Johansson, Zora Folley twice and Joe Bugner as well as nearly knocking out Ali when he floored him at the end of the 4th round of their first fight before losing in the fifth on cuts.
Cooper indeed caught the young Ali with a wicked left hook and Ali was obviously groggy. But I think Ali, being in the prime of his youth would have recovered from the impact of that blow even without his corner resorting to deceitful delaying tactic such as aggravating a tear in Ali’s glove prompting the ref to order that it be replaced by a new one. It was that mischievous incident that made that fight memorable and controversial. I think Ali could have recovered on his own and come back to stop the gritty Briton. I don’t think Henry had the capability to put away Ali. He just got lucky and Ali was a little careless when he connected with that booming left.
