When In Doubt – Choke ‘Em Out (With A Gi Choke) – Perhaps the most Beneficial Yet still Most Underated Tactic In the Martial Arts
In Defense of Gi Chokes – The Most Indispensable Yet Most Underated Move In the Martial Arts
With the appeal of MMA events like the UFC, martial arts like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu have at the same time become extremely popular, due to their proven success in the cage. A great deal of folks however make the blunder of thinking that since MMA is “for real” then whatever is not used in MMA is not a really practical move.
A perfect case in point is the use of the gi usually, and gi chokes in particular. Many feel that no-gi grappling is just “more helpful” because people today don’t go roughly around being dressed in gis on the street, and they unquestionably don’t sport them in the cage. Thus they quickly conclude, if you want successful grappling for real life encounters – go with no-gi grappling.
This analysis is unhappily incorrect. While it is a fact that not anyone wears a gi anymore in MMA contest, it is equally the truth that hardly anybody goes around wearing only board shorts and MMA gloves. On the street, that is, in bars, gas stations, Walmarts and so on – people wear CLOTHES. T shirts, jackets, sport coats, leather vests – you name it, folks generally walk around with clothes on.
The chances are that when you get into a fight - both you and your foe will be wearing CLOTHING of some sort.
Now this simple reality should really make anyone with an interest in self defense to perk up their ears! In case you didn’t understand or know GI CHOKES, that is, the collar chokes you learn in Judo and BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) WORK ON ALMOST ANY TYPE OF UPPER BODY CLOTHING. Beyond conceivably a lanky tank top, GI CHOKES WILL WORK ON SOMEONE Sporting Tshirts, a jacket, a polo top, a down winter coat, a leather vest or whatever.
With that basic point under consideration, do yourself a favor and bear in mind these 3 points:
1st – GI CHOKES WORK Marvelous ON “Usual Garments”
2nd – GI CHOKES Are HIGHLY Effective!! – These can totally put a person to sleep in no time at all and they can be particularly difficult if not hopeless to escape from once they are locked on.
Lastly – GI CHOKES CAN BE VERY SNEAKY!! – A good number of people (even no-gi grapplers) don’t have any thought how to look out for these and stop them from cinching up around their necks!
So if your martial arts study is geared towards self defense at all, don’t forget about training in gi chokes. Not only are they sensible, and extremely powerful, they are additionally a lot of fun to practice.
