Blocking in a fist fight?
Boxing/kickboxing etc… it is must easier to block since there are gloves. I recently tried bare fist with a helmet and practiced blocking my head in an open fist fight with a friend (i just let him punch me in the head any way he wanted)
It’s must harder! I know I could punch back, run away etc… but any advice?
I do martial arts, I’m not some punk who simply wants to learn to fight, just thinking of what would I do in the street as today I was chased by a group of punks :]
Blocking is only one technique to use for defending yourself – remember that. To fight defensively, you need to learn to bob and weave, duck, deflect, counter, shoulder roll, dodge, etc.
We train blocking as a last resort – why take a punch of any kind when you can move out of the way and not get hit, right?
I agree with the poster who says that blocking is essentially “taking less direct punches” – you’re still getting hit, but the idea is to spread out the force over a larger area and not get hit flush.
Anyway, when you are blocking a fist or small glove, try the double pillar for straight shots (elbows and fists together in front of your face) and a tight cover for hooks (open hand , thumb on your shoulder, tilt your head toward the blow, and keep your shoulder high, chin down).
And don’t get stuck trying to cover and block every shot – as soon as you can, start attacking. You will never ever win a fight by defending alone…get your opponent defending and you’ll eventually find an opening to deliver some damage.
