Is the open guard same as the spider guard?
I’ve seen a video in which Mario Sperry comments on how laughable it is that so many people confuse these two. My teacher, Professor Tony Souza, has been teaching me the “open guard” for the past few lessons I’ve attended. However, I don’t see any difference between the open guard and the spider guard. Help?

Open Guard is essentially the term for anytime you feet aren’t scissored in closed guard.
There are many different open guard positions that all have nicknames, even amongst other BJJ stylists they use many different names for the same sort of positions.
Don’t get to hung up on it, open guard is a general term, and spider guard is a specific methodology of controlling in the open guard (as Jake said).
