Is a republic a despotic form of government?
Despotism is government unchecked. Separation of power does not guard against despotism. Democracies are empowered by majority rule, which is always tyrannical to its corresponding minority. Each house of the American Congress is governed by majority will. The decisions of the Supreme Judiciary is likewise majority based. The election of Executive is elected by majority vote.
If such a majority wishes to oppress a certain class or creed, is it unreasonable to assume that this same will exists in the majority of the Houses of law, the Presidency picked by the popular will and the Justices placed upon the bench thereby? The mind of the crowd, be it in the court or courtyard, is an unstoppable instrument of oppression, and seeks to exclusively advance the status quo.
In my experience, proponents of democracy are at a loss to defend its shortcomings, finding solace only in the fact that they can conceive of no better system.
When you elect a bunch of power hungry, crooked, rats…any government will become despotic.
There is only one real solution….
…There is no better system. The problem is that corruption is inevitable and eventually I think we will have to hit the RESET button.
