Anyone else struggle to bring Judo throws to No-Gi grappling / MMA?
Doing Judo I am comfortable throwing and reasonably competitive with most guys. When I go for an MMA workout or grappling with No Gi my throwing game just crashes and burns. Alot of my fellow Judo partners also do some training in throws without the Gi but they seem to do it much better than I do. What is my problem how come they can adapt to throwing without the Gi and I struggle so badly? Is there specific throws I should be looking for? Is it some kind of mental block? I think I know the areas in the body I am suppose to substitute for the Gi but nothing seems natural.
Actually it is pretty easy, you just have to change your mentaility a little bit. Don’t go for a collar sleeve approach (or head/neck, and tricep grips) learn to throw from overhooks/underhooks.
Uchi Mata is usually there all day from a whizzer standpoint or from an underhook scenario. A ton of throws can be done if you have your opponent in a standing kimura and are controlling that arm.
The big thing is not to play Judo in MMA, but to play MMA and use your Judo. It was a struggle for me because I focused on getting the back on someone’s neck and their tricep for a collar sleeve sort of feel, the control is much different from there and will make a lot of your throws irrelevant since you don’t have the tight control you do with a gi.
Shift your focus to learning to throw from common wrestling/MMA positions. Overhooks, underhooks, whizzer, etc. Once you go from there you can see how things open up for you. O uchi gari, osoto gari, makikomis, harai goshi, and Uchi Matas are all easily opened up from overhook/underhook positions.
I am telling you that is the whole key, is learning how to control the same quarters of the body without a gi. So you can control an arm with a kimura, or a shoulder with an undehook/overhook, and get the same body tightness, and the throws come. YOu can even set up the same combinations, from an overhook/underhook, I set up my Osoto with a Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi, a lot of times I nail the Sasae.
The big thing is getting out of the collar/lapel and sleeve approach and going at it from an underhook/overhook, whizzer or kimura approach and you will find out things open themselves up.
Watch some of Karo’s set ups and you can see what I mean.

Hope that helps, it did for me. It opened up my whole Judo game once I approached No Gi the right way.

Wow Mike C, seems like you got some animosity there.
Actually I have a real job in IT, I prefer making money then dealing with drunks and crazies. I did security while in school and the Army. However I am more than willing to bet I dealt with more physical situations in my 4 years of security work than you did as your 8 years in Law Enforcement. Simply because I didn’t have a tazer, a baton, back up, and the uniform. People are way more likely to take a swing at bouncers than cops.
But I will stick to fighting MMA, instead of writing traffic tickets for my combat experience thank you.
(Btw, my kudos goes to you if you actually were a cop, I work with them closely doing Canine Search and Rescue, I think it takes guts to do that job for very the little money they pay and have to deal with the drama you guys have to deal with. You would have to pay me a WHOLE lot more money to do that kind of work. I won’t even do security work anymore and I was getting paid 40 bucks an hour cash under the table)
btw Stripper titties beat out white trash housewife arguing with her husband while topless and high on meth titties anyday…
