Gold Dragon

Is Dragons’ Den Keeping Up Its Purpose?

Whether you loathe it, or you love it, no one could deny the impact as well as the consequent success of BBC creator/entrepreneur show, Dragons’ Den – the opening series itself recorded a whopping viewing figure of 1.2 mn and ever since the show has kept growing in popularity. There are a few serials aired on television, which have become so popular to viewers all over the world, and Dragons’ Den boasts to be one of them.

Dragons’ Den could make for convincing, if not entertainingly disastrous as well as cringe-worthy television. But it is the people who fail, and do so miserably, which provide the TV gold which leaks from Dragons’ Den programme.

Another facet of the show is the Dragons themselves. These Dragons have their personal sayings, expressions and demeanours. Duncan Bannatyne is present on the show with his deep Scottish pronunciation, forever to the point and unaware of the person he offends.

Deborah Meaden is another lady on the show – appears as if she would make a great pantomime villain. The kind of face she has that looks as if that would crack if she smiled; Theo Pathitis is very entertaining just because of his serious quips; James Caan could be called the likeable, but ruthless Dragon. His usual habit in telling some hopeful pitcher that he is not very keen to invest in their business has become a signature feature of the show. Finally Peter Jones – the person as tall as arrogant.

Dragons’ Den ran on the television for six series. The 7th one is set to be aired in spring. The programme is into its 4th year, and besides being a well planed as well as entertaining TV show, Dragons’ Den actually does provide opportunities for people lucky enough to get a deal. Cynics might say that the presence of Dragons on the show is only for the purpose to make profit from the ideas of other people, but, on the contrary, it is a two way process.

The most familiar area where entrepreneurial hopeful people go unstuck are through poor pitching preparation. Habitually their finances are scattered in different places and are entirely inaccurate. This is what puts a sense of immediate mistrust in the Dragons’ mind. A well chalked-out, convinced pitch is extremely significant as the product.

The Dragons love to belittle a person who hasn’t really prepared adequately for their pitch. Nevertheless, that is something which makes the show so appealing to viewers, especially those who take pleasure in other peoples’ pity.

Besides its apparent appeals, Dragons’ Den sketches the fact that business projects in Britain are healthy. There are several talented entrepreneurs as well as creative minds who hope to get a big break, and of course mentoring and investment from the Den. No matter if that shapes the financial positions of those Dragons choosing to invest as well as provide their expertise, and knowledge, so long this keeps the industry afloat during recession, and putting a smile on the faces of worldwide viewers at the same time.

The California girl who wanted to be a Welsh witch has always been best when her mysticism and mooniness has been offset by harder-headed collaborators. Though this box set doesn’t include the Fleetwood Mac stuff that made her name, it does pull together curious stuff she’s done elsewhere: pre-Mac work with Lindsey Buckingham from the Buckingham Nicks days, duets with the likes of Tom Petty and Do…

Exit the Dragon

Exit the Dragon

$5.80

Exit the Dragon is a somber, brooding effort fueled by more than a touch of “woe is me.” There is no larger-than-life FM-rock anthem on this album; no Paul Shaffer favorite like Saturation’s “Sister Havana.” Produced once again by Philadelphia’s Butcher Brothers, Joe and Phil Nicolo, the 15 songs are almost all mid-tempo groovers. In place of the last album’s shimmering guitars and thunderou…

Disney loved to mix live action with animation (Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks), but this 1977 effort falls on its face. The turn-of-the-century story concerns an orphaned boy whose only friend is a cartoon monster. While the latter is entertainingly rendered, the rest of the film strains to be enchanting and the cast overreaches in a big way. Not for anybody over the age of ten. –Tom Keo…
