Would a 75 Watt amp be sufficient to fill a school gym for a talent show?

First off, the most important thing is how well you play, not how loud you play.
Moving on, the amp you mention is only 25 watts RMS. The 75 watt rating is likely what’s called “peak effective power,” which is basically what the amp can produce for a fraction of a second before blowing up. An RMS rating is more reflective of an amplifier’s true working output power. All professional amps are rated in RMS not peak.
Now… 25 watts RMS is pretty loud in a small room. If you’re the only one playing, people should be able to hear you if they aren’t making a bunch of noise themselves, but you wont be “loud” in a room that is big enough for a basketball court (and most gyms are big enough for at least one bball court.) If you’re playing with a band, the drumset will probably be louder than that amp *unless* the drummer is good at controlling his or her volume.
So… here are a couple of practical solutions:
- If the event is going to provide a PA system, see whether they are willing to mic your amp. This might just substitute one problem for several others, tho. If you’re going thru the PA and the rest of your band is not. If the whole band is mic’ed, you’d better hope that whoever is running the mixing board knows what they’re doing, or you might not be able to hear yourself onstage, or you might not stand out well in the mix. This is why a lot of bands bring their own sound system and sound person. On the flip side, many bands that bring their own PA don’t know how to run it, and are too loud and sound awful. This is why a lot of clubs provide their own PA system and sound person. Yeah, it’s a sticky problem!
- If you really need to get ahold of a larger amp, see if a friend will let you borrow his. Or you could rent one from a local music store for maybe $25 for the weekend. If you take this approach, make sure you pick up the amp at least a day or two before the show so that you can get used to how it responds. Play it alone for an evening, then use it at a full band rehearsal for another evening, THEN play the show. There is no greater nightmare than a new piece of gear that’s acting up on stage.
- If you get the larger amp, be sure you have a cord that’s at least 15-25 feet long. You can’t stand too close to an amp that’s cranked up without getting feedback. This is true of ALL amps and ALL guitars, and it is even more true for acoustic or semi-hollowbody guitars.
- The poster that recommends four 150 watt amps is going overboard. I’ve played some very large rooms and never needed more than 100 watts RMS. When you start to need more than that, you are typically in a situation that provides a PA system.
