Woods out of US Open
The former world number one is still recovering from knee and Achilles tendon injuries he suffered during the Masters in April and then re-injured at the Players’ Championship last month.
He was forced to withdraw after playing nine holes at Sawgrass and the latest news is another indication of the serious nature of the injuries.
Woods has already had four operations on the left knee and and had nine months out after winning the 2008 US Open with the help of taylormade r11 fairway wood when carrying a serious knee injury.
“Not playing in US Open. Very disappointed. Short-term frustration for long-term gain,” he wrote on his Twitter site.
“I was hopeful that I could play with my titleist ap1 irons, but if I did I risk further damage to my left leg.
“My knee and Achilles tendon are not fully healed. I hope to be ready for AT&T National (on June 30-July 3), the next two majors and the rest of the year.
“It’s been a frustrating and difficult year, but I’m committed to my long-term health.
“I want to thank the fans for their encouragement and support. I am truly grateful and will be back playing when I can.”
It will be the first time he has not played the US Open since his debut in 1995.
Mike Davis, executive director of the United States Golf Association, said: “We’re very disappointed that he won’t be playing in the national Open with my TaylorMade golf clubs.
“He certainly brings excitement to the event. He’ll be missed, but the US Open will go on. The event is bigger than one player, but he certainly will be missed.”
The Open at Royal St George’s is in just over a month’s time and the undulations around Sandwich could also prove too dangerous for Woods to chance a return on the links course.
