Staffordshire Bull Terrier – Origin and History
The Staffordshire bull terrier is a great dog to have as a pet and the breed has a very interesting history. Staffies are a very popular breed and two big reasons for their popularity are the fact that this is the only breed in the world that is tagged “totally reliable”. Second, it is one of the only two dog breeds in the U.K that are certified to be suitable for families with children.
This incredibly strong and agile breed traces its origins to England of old. The breed’s existence can be traced to the 17th century; around 350 years back in time. The breed was evolved specifically for the bloodsport of bull baiting. The bulldog known for its strength and ferocity was crossed with a terrier – the latter breed known for tenacity and pluck. The result is that the Staffordshire bull terrier is a stocky muscular breed that is incredibly strong, muscular, as well as indefatigable in body and spirit. During the early days of the breed’s existence it was called Pit Dog. Right from those days, one trait that stood out was the animal’s consideration for children.
The dogs found willing owners across cross-section of the British society. Aristocrats and coal miners both kept Staffies as pets. Working class people used these pets as ratters and for hunting badgers; a good way for some extra income.
In the 1830s, dog fighting lost legitimacy in the U.K. The breed was in danger of slipping out of public consciousness as breeders no longer had the incentive for rearing Staffordshire bull terriers. It was in Staffordshire that a group of dog lovers came together to keep the breed from going extinct. Thus, we get the name Staffordshire bull terrier. The name also helps to distinguish the breed from other bull terrier breeds that have originated in England.
In time, the standard for the breed was laid down. This serves as the template for selecting and rearing these dogs and also when entering them in dog shows.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier got official recognition in 1935 by the U.K Kennel Club and in 1938 it was accorded championship status. Today, there are Staffordshire bull terrier clubs all over the world. The breed figures amongst the most popular ones in most countries.
Today, this breed with its fascinating history has come a long way from the early days of its origin and yet retains all the characteristics that made it such a beloved pet back then.
