The Styling Obsession
The car is increasingly becoming a sanctuary for many, an area of personal space which we value in a busy lifestyle constantly on the move. It is claimed that the average person now spends an astonishing two years of their life sat in traffic jams, impatiently tapping the steering wheel as we allow our mind to drift from the gridlocked road ahead. Our homes are becoming less private, with new technology infiltrating our homes as well as uninvited callers. The car is one of the few remaining places where we have undiminished control of our personal space, although admittedly the radio and roadside billboards try to wage war. For me, driving is a time of relaxation as I undertake some of my best thinking while I am behind the wheel. The monotonous nature of driving seems to send me into a trance-like state, one that I am infuriated to be awoken from should road conditions suddenly change.
Indeed, some people are immensely proud of their vehicle, adoring their chariot with hideous bodykits and a myriad of car accessories as so to be seen while they are cruising their local streets. As a society, we are quick to judge on first impressions, and a car says much about a particular person. We even have customised car mats and a variety of random trinkets to hang from the review mirror, a vital piece of safety equipment which we devalue by having a tiny set of Ricky Hatton’s boxing gloves dangling below. After all this effort, some even choose to add tinted windows so that only a vague outline of the driver be noticeable, perhaps to imply they are too important to be gawped at by the general public.
On the flip side, it isn’t just the automobile that we are obsessed with decorating. Mobile phone accessories, pet jewellery and designer baby clothes are all examples of how our post-modern society has reinforced that style is infinitely more important than substance.
