HERE’S A BOXFUL OF TIPS FOR PACKING AND STORAGE
There are some people who spend their lives collecting stuff, and there are others who live without.But even if you’re not the type to collect and hoard masses of stuff, you’re probably still likely to need storage somewhere along the way.
Whether you’re moving house, moving offices, decluttering your living space, stashing your children’s memorabilia, putting extra furniture ‘on hold’ or perhaps you’re simply in between stages of your life…stashing your stuff in a self-storage unit is a practical and secure option.
A little forward planning will take the hassle out of packing and storing. Following are some packing hints to simplify the process and enable you to access that important item if you need to !
SOME GENERAL HINTS
* Always use wrapping paper that isn’t printed as newsprint can leave marks
• Take photographs of valuable items for insurance purposes
* Certified copies of all your vital documents should be held by a third party
* Pack a home ‘room by room’ and keep contents as close together as possible for easy unpacking
• Have a designated ‘necessities’ box which can be unpacked first and which contains vital items such as adapter plugs, screwdriver, remote controls for TVs etc, a set of linen for each bed that will need to be made up on the first night, torch, candle
BOXES
* Boxes should be the same size and should not be too big, as they get too heavy and impossible to move
* Ensure all boxes are clearly labelled.You could also number the boxes and keep a list of what’s contained in each box in a separate location.Another suggestion from EzyStorage, a Perth self storage unit company, is to pack each room into boxes with a specific coloured label eg. red labels for dining room, green for kitchen etc.
• Add a few naphthalene balls to each box
• Seal boxes completely with packing tape
* Ensure labels face outwards !
* To avoid items (furniture, boxes) from absorbing moisture from the concrete floor, place them on pallets
OTHER ITEMS
* Books should always be packed flat to protect the spines
* Anything that has a glass front ie a mirror, picture etc should be stored upright or on its side
* Take batteries out of any battery operated item
• Silver should be wrapped in non-acidic tissue paper to prevent tarnishing
To avoid rusting, wipe down all metal, cast iron or chrome surfaces (eg bicyles and lawn mowers) with a rag and a few drops of machine oil
* Machinery should be drained of petrol and any other flammable liquids, and gas bottled emptied
• Fridges and freezers should be thoroughly cleaned and dried before storing.Whilst in storage, the doors should be kept slightly open
• Clothing and curtains should be hung on hangers if possible
FURNITURE
* Mattresses and couches should stand on their sides or ends, not flat
* Where possible, remove table legs and stack tables upside down.
* Tape keys from draws, doors etc. to the inside of the furniture
PACKING THE STORAGE AREA
* Make a central aisle or walkway for easy access
* Always store items that you may require access to at the front of the unit
* Valuable items should be stored at the back of the unit
• Consider using shelving to create more accessible space
* Put a dust cover made from cotton or a light plastic sheet over everything
